ONE YEAR AND GOING STRONG! | RED DEER REAL ESTATE

Photobucket

As the end of 2009 approaches, I will be celebrating my first full year in the real estate business in Central Alberta. With all of the talk of economic turmoil as the end of 2008 approached, to say that I was a little tentative and nervous about starting up my career at this point in...

Thanks girls! Your career is what you make of it, if you are going to do it for a while you might as well do something you enjoy and do it a way that is enjoyable to you! Nice work on the Babycakes website by the way!

Louise - December 19, 2009 - 3:34 pm

Your marketing of ‘just being yourself’ is brilliant and stands apart from any other realtor I have known. We often brag about how fantastic you are in this industry. Keep doing what you are doing Mike, congrats.

Everyone is on about food, but have you all been to that nice little ladies clothing shop on 53rd Street, just west of Central school-cannot think of the name of it, but, it has new and “gently used” clothing-only quality items are seen there, along with shoes, jewellery, purses etc. It is in an old home that has been fixed up with love. There are other interesting shops along that street as well. It is worth a wander down that street.

MW - November 27, 2009 - 4:44 pm

Great comments people, so many places for me to go check out. Just out of curiosity Drew, how the heck do you know anything about Red Deer?! We are kind of far from Campbell River… Althought that was a good choice!

Drew Lamirande - November 27, 2009 - 8:53 am

Eh-Yo Albertan’s!

My favourite Red Deer small business (besides True North Realty), would have to be Inner Radiance Day Spa. Located downtown Red Deer, this small business provides a rain-forest inspired theme – something to remind me of my island paradise home. A deep tissue massage, followed by a body wrap is the best prelude to the most relaxing aromatic steaming in their newly renovated steam-room. Why not treat yourself to a little manpering?

Michelle Rauckman - November 26, 2009 - 9:59 pm

One of my most favorite red deer business is a delightful little shop down town called House Warmings. It seriously has the most unique gifts and cards down there. The woman that owns it is really delightful and loves what she does. When ever I am looking for that hard to shop for person, I just go down there and I can always find something that is unique and right. You should seriously check it out.

I am a big coffee person, so one of my favorite places is Cafe Vero located in the Eastview shopping plaza next to Sobeys. It was opened by the owners of Apple Drugs a few years ago. I also had the pleasure of working there for a year and half and it made some great memories and also allowed me to meet some great people. Its fairly low key which is nice if you want to take a quiet break with a delicious hot or cold beverage. They also serve freshly made panini sandwiches which make a perfect lunch as well as a variety of desserts! Another interesting aspect of the cafe is that they host art openings monthly. Its a great opportunity for new (or old) artists/photographers to show off and even sell some of their greatest work.
So if you love coffee but need to get away from the Starbucks trend, go check it out!

Favorite local Red Deer business… That’s a tough one… I guess I’d have to say Brandon County Saloon. Wait, I mean the Manhatten Club. Wait I mean Tryst. Wait, I don’t even know anymore… I wish they wouldn’t change the name of that bar everytime someone gets stabbed there… I find it really confusing. Are those metal detectors even plugged in?

Amanda Blair - November 25, 2009 - 10:45 am

Agreed on the Velet Olive!!! It is marvolous!!!!! Have you ever heard of Burgs?? Its up in Deer Park not far from my house!! The staff is sososo nice and the food is sososo good!!! Very fresh and they have the coolest french fries!!

Danny - November 24, 2009 - 8:10 pm

Scratch my last comment. I forgot that Old Mil is brewed in Guelph. Not only is it my favorite local business but it is the one I support the most. In fact I am supporting it right now as I write this post. I can even see how my personal contribution supports the local economy. I buy and drink my Old Mil and then kindly give my empty cans to the local hobbos. In an average week I bet I give enough so that they too can go out and enjoy their own 6 pack of local liquid gold.

Louise - November 24, 2009 - 6:15 pm

Free cupcakes? Why twist my rubber arm…
1) I second Andrea and vote for Velvet Olive. It’s always the first place we go to on a night out. 2) Matchbox Theatre. I haven’t been as much as I wish but love the atmosphere and culture it adds to our wee city. 3) Second floor of Sunworks. It’s brilliant light and open space is intoxicating. 4) babycakes cupcakery, of course. 5) (cuz I’m on a roll) Tipi Tina’s Diner out at the airport. The ladies are charming and this quirky little lunch spot has thee best sandwiches around.

Dammit Danny! I was hoping no one would respond so that I could take the win.
1.) Cattleya Chic (sp), an amazing florist in town… her designs brighten up my day
2.) Velvet Olive…where have you been all my life.
3.) Babycakes: You are my weakness.

Remembrance Day makes me think of the people who lost their lives in wars, past and present. I think having Remembrance day is way to acknowledge that they gave their lives for their country. Thankyou.

Amy - November 9, 2009 - 4:01 pm

This makes me think of a couple of friends I have who work in the army. You hear a lot of people hating on the military guys because they don’t believe in war, but when you actually talk to some of these guys, you begin to understand that they aren’t fighting for the sake of fighting… they’re fighting because they want the world to be a better place.

Richelle - November 9, 2009 - 1:36 pm

It makes me think of an old picture of my Grandpa in his uniform: it was a picture taken just after he faked his age and joined the Canadian Airforce at the tender age of 16. His skin is soft with youth and his cheeks are re-touched by the photographer in the palest shade of blush. His eyes are hauntingly innocent. To this day, he will not speak of the time spent in the skies while our country. If you ask him what he thinks of the young men who serve today, he will only say, “Somebody has to.”

Andrea Wiseman - November 9, 2009 - 9:34 am

It makes me think of the brave Canadian soldiers that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It also makes me think of poppy…and those pins. I think those symbols are timeless. It’s odd though…being French Canadian, I don’t remember them teaching us about this subject when I lived in Quebec.

3/50 PROJECT | SUPPORT

This is well worth reading and supporting. Andrea and I have agreed to support at least one local business a month by shopping & blogging about them. If you’re a local business owner that would like to be featured, drop us a line: mike@mikewiseman.com / andrea@andreawiseman.com http://www.the350project.net/home.html Excerpt/Screenshot from the blog and what its about:

Nice! I love your whole attitude on this stuff lately. I love that you go out of the way to make a difference, and find ways for other people to make a difference.
I can only think of one locally owned business in Red Deer that I have always and will always support as long as it’s around and that’s Records to the Rafters. It’s owned by the coolest guy around who knows everything about old classic rock and some metal and pretty much any genre you could imagine. He’s a sweet guy, interesting to talk to, and the store has some awesome treasures if you look in the right places. Every time I go there I give him old record players to fix and sell or buy a couple records just to give him my support.

[...] of you who have been following along may remember a post a while back about the 3/50 Project, that both Andrea and myself had become involved with in an effort to promote and support local [...]
