RED DEER REAL ESTATE | NEW VS. OLD

The longer I am in real estate, the more this topic comes up with buyers and sellers. It really is quite the topic of discussion for people when looking to make a move in real estate. I had written a blog post a while back on new vs. old and the potential return on investment...

As someone who grew up in an older home in a matured neighborhood…OLD IS GOLD! Homes built in the 50s and 60s will outlast most new homes!

admin - January 9, 2012 - 12:55 pm

Hey Heather! Nice to get a perspective from someone who has done both, hope you guys are enjoying the new (old) home!

Heather R. - January 9, 2012 - 12:05 pm

Older 100%, we’ve done the new. And after a few years became unenchanted. Between the house settling and trying to get warrenty work (not getting into that), and privacy. When our backyard after ten feet became our neighbours front yard. Was not for us. With older it can be a headache and a surprise of ‘whats next to go’? We are redoing our deck this summer since all the tiles are literally falling off. But for the character and privacy (10 mature trees) I wouldnt have it any other way

Thanks for the note Colette! I am on-board with you there, fixing up an old house can be a ton of fun :)

I am all about the old house for the mature yard and character. And considering I am an interior decorator, fixing up an old house is the fun part for me!

Haha, thanks for the comment Brian, as I suspected efficiency vs. maturity is a great topic of discussion. Positives and Negatives on both sides of the coin. Delburne can only hope you are right, they need the uptick in house value ;)

I’ve built two new houses, and have been landscaping for 10 years, watching teesny little trees struggle for life. Dollar for dollar, we’ve spent thousands on landscaping. We could have spent that on a stainless steel kitchen in an older home. But, our utilities are less now than they were 10 years ago.

It’s Utility bills vs. mature yard for me. the rest is a wash.

Won’t be building again. Pretty soon the new houses in Red Deer will be in Delburne anyway :)

Yeah 18 years ago that gift totally was off the mark, but now that I am “mature” as some say, I would find it very interesting. Not sure the same would be true for your brother though!

Jessica - January 3, 2012 - 1:39 pm

Thanks again!! So excited!! :)

I loved your gift disaster story… devastating as a 13 year old but a totally awesome gift now.. :) Isn’t that the way it always goes? :D
