haha i love the deadbolt secret handshake thing. That’s totally my in laws!! We’re house sitting it right now and I’ve had to learn 3 different handshakes today alone. I agree 100%, Mike! What is keeping those publications (and newspapers in general) afloat? The mistaken belief that the ROI is there and/or simply doing it because “that’s just what you do”. Good on you for seeing past it and doing something more effective.

What you said about “standing on the corner and yelling your name” is kind of what I was hinting at. I understand that print still holds value for a portion of the community, but a larger portion has shifted away, and the timeline behind the whole print process really is a detriment if time is of the essence (as it more than likely is with real estate).

And the poor design of real estate print advertising is a large portion of the reasoning behind my moving away from it. I simply do not want to be associated with that out-dated model of (self) promotion!

I think this is a very good point. As a guy who sells printing AND interactive products, I have some insight. A lot of real estate print is hideous. It’s effectiveness is limited by that.

YHYM is a terrible piece to read and if it was re-designed, it could be vastly better. I think you have to temper your criticism of print with the quality and execution of each piece. The just listed/sold flyers are less useful for me certainly – in a hot market they are to slow to get messages out.

Print is a good way to “stand on a street corner and yell your name”. It’s really as simple as that. It works. The ethics of carving up boreal forest for that purpose are a debate in their own right.

You are very effective at using new/social media. Many Baby-boomers are not. Really it’s just a testimony to fresh blood doing things in a new way. A lot of people we sell websites to are classic – wanting a cool web presence and then not really using it. Print is easy – web based marketing actually is harder in many ways.

AND my wife uses REALTOR.ca daily.

If I lived in Canada and you weren’t my brother, I’d totally pick you for my realtor. I mean, I would because you’re my brother, but even if you weren’t, I’d still totally pick you. You’ve got a good attitude, you’re focused on others than just yourself, and your posts actually make me smile, even though I live in Scandinavia and the majority of what you say doesn’t apply to anything in my life.
