WIN DINNER AND DRINKS! | HOLIDAY CONTEST (CITIES GASTRO PUB)

Hello everyone! It has been a bit of a barren wasteland on the blog as of late, due to a very busy fall season involving my return to school. I am in the midst of finishing my Broker’s program for real estate, meaning that once complete I will be taking over the management duties at True North Realty...

This is awesome Steph! Please tell me that Kev still has the sculpture, this would be the ultimate gift!!

One year, I got a gift from Kevins 90 year old grandmother. it was a box of chocolates, the tag said : “to Kevins girl fiancee” the chocolates had expired in 1998 and were from the salvation army. The thought was nice.

But this submition is all about Kevin and his gift….

A few years earlier, Kevin received a gift from that same grandmother… it was a clock sculpture of Jesus at the last supper, along with his disciples.. adorned with multicolored fiber optics… and jesus had red glowing eyes…. I think Kevin had been to church about 3 times at that point, 2 of which were for weddings… lol!

Thanks for the comment Joel! Now I know who to call if I need some pant holes patched up :)

I’ve always been thoroughly spoiled by my parents and have come to be humbled year after year by thoughtful and usually expensive/elaborate gifts. I guess that’s the product of being an only child?
So I’m in second year University and brought home for christmas various stories of residence exploits, keg parties, and a couple Big Bears to share with my Dad….I was on a tight budget after all!
So I wasn’t ashamed to receive some beer brand logoed t-shirts, school supplies, and then….an amazing new palm pilot with a keyboard for school!
A few gifts remained and I sincerely hoped for small ticket items as I was already feeling over gifted.
I dove into a carefully wrapped box from my mom and unwrapped a…a….sewing machine? Ummm. Is this for me? My mom excitedly chanted “now you can fix your own pants!” Her manly beer guzzling university stud was reduced to few words. Thanks? Mom?

Every kid fresh out of high school needs a tie-dyed shirt Dustin! I think the best part about this is that you re-gifted it to him, that is classic!

Ha! Nice to know grandma was trying, maybe she should have included instructions with the items. I bet her most coveted utensil was a funnel :) Thanks for the post Karli, hope you and Chris have a great holiday season!

The year was 1999. I was 19 years old and off to college. My younger brother who was 17 decided that it was time for him to pick out the gifts he wanted to give to his family. Much to my surprise, I received a plain white t-shirt (kind of boreing, but at least it was the right size). Next thing I know, there is something else in the gift bag, a tie dye kit. What on earth would I want a tie dyed shirt for. Needless to say, I re-gifted it back to him on his birthday. At least it went to someone who thought it was still radical!

It is hard for me to recall a terrible gift that I have received at Christmas time (birthdays are a whole other thing). A few years ago my 80 something grandma gave me a bag of goodies on Christmas that I was excited to open. The previous year grandma gave me a hand made purse that I LOVED. Ok so I sit down on the floor to open this bag of goodies and I start pulling things out. I pull out a knitted dishcloth. Very awesome can always use them. Then I pull out a bottle of avon body wash. Once again this can be useful. Next we have a pink bath loofah. Hmmm do I stink or something Grandma? But the last item in the bag was the real kicker to the worst Christmas present ever. The final I item I pulled out of the bag was a little yellow funnel. Yes that’s right a funnel. What in the world do I need one of those for. I just looked up and there was Grandma all smiles and me with this look of total confusion. Meantime my sister is laughing so hard she had to leave the room. I smiled politely and told Grandma it was a great present. After Grandma left I had my mom laughing so hard she was in tears telling her about this gift she did not have to pleasure to witness me opening. Now you know the story of my worst present :)

There are so many disasterous presents it’s hard to pick just one…
Two years ago my mother in law got me a Christmas present, that she also got me on my birthday that year 4 months before Christmas. Needles to say when I opened it on Christmas I was more confused than excited, and I still to this day haven’t had the heart to tell her.

My other mother in law and father in law for some reason think that I have an obesession with Winnie the Pooh (I’m 28 years old, and I can assure you I don’t) so for years every Christmas and birthday I receive something winnie the pooh, a pencil in my stocking, a stuffed bear, socks, and on and on and on…

Great contest Mike! and I love your holiday family photo you guys rock!

Hey Mike.. So, this isn’t really about a gift I received, but a gift for my brother that I actually witnessed him open.. This was about 7 years ago… My middle brother had just opened his big gift and it was an authentic Team Canada hockey jersey.. he was stoked and so was my younger brother.. they were oohing and ahhing over, checking out all the details.. so then my youngest brother goes to open his gift… it wasn’t his big one, but still, he was pretty stoked, I think… he rips back the paper and it’s a…… juggling set with a how-to book… hahahahah!! The look on his face just fell to the floor… He had received his big gift earlier in the fall (new camping and outdoor gear and he needed for his high school back packing trip).. I think he was expecting a little but more to his taste for his smaller gift than a juggling set… anyway, he didn’t really want to say anything to my mom, but then my other brother broke the ice by teasing my mom about getting juggling balls for his gift.. we were all dying laughing by the end of the night.. when my brothers get going they’re kind of a 2-man comedy show.. Anyway, my mom still gets razzed about that gift to this day.. She took it all in good stride and shakes her head, wondering why she ever got my totally uncoordinated brother a juggling set.. :)

My guess as to yours is….shall I say??
That same grandma used to try to dress me up every Christmas with a ‘nice dress’ or ‘nice blouse’ which I usually gave to MY mom-the worst was the black and white plaid, pleated mid calf skirt. Probably was not cheap, but it was not me either.

Amy - December 19, 2011 - 10:12 am

I can only think of the time that my special someone didn’t GET me a Christmas present x) That was a bit of a burn.

I’m a bit more curious in knowing what yours was though =)
