Do you enjoy a nice summer morning stroll down to Red Deer’s own Farmer’s Market evey Saturday?
Perhaps you enjoy going to pick up some locally produced goods to load your fridge for the week.
Do you ever find yourself unable to make it to the market one week, or running a bit short on food items come the end of the week, and wished there was another option available to you?
Well, I have some great news for all of you lovers of fresh, local food!
Red Deer has opened up a second locally driven and supported market, available for all of you who are unable to make it on Saturdays! Every Wednesday, from 4-7pm, the “Downtown Market” will be held in the parking lot on the corner of Gaetz Ave South and Ross St East (where the old Arlington Hotel was located).
Here you will NOT find booths selling trinkets, antiques, Sham-Wows, or Real Estate Services. Here you will find only locally conceived foods, and the cozy location makes it nice and quick to navigate for your items without having to skip all the specialty booths.
The “Downtown Market” supports locally grown foods, or handmade foods using local ingredients (such as pies, cookies, honey, perogies, or bread).
The great thing about the Wednesday market is it offers local residents an alternative to the Saturday market, and keeps the number of booths reasonable and focused on food supply, so that even people with a busy schedule can be able to stop in and easily navigate the booths to locate what they need for the week.
Not only does this help support our local farmer’s, it also gives the local population a healthier alternative food source that has created a much lower environmental impact in its production and transportation (lower carbon emission costs for transportation and manufacturing of processed foods).
If you like to support your local growers, please take some time to stop by the market and chat with the friendly people who bring our community fresh food every week! The vendors, for example The Fresh Food Farm out of Sylvan Lake (above), are very friendly and more than happy to answer any questions you may have about their products.
